Outgoing Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku has intervened to ease tensions between Embu Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and Governor Cecily Mbarire just days before President William Ruto’s visit to the region.
President Ruto is expected to conclude his Mt. Kenya development tour in Embu County.
However, the visit faced uncertainty after reports emerged that a group of MCAs was planning to disrupt the event.
The MCAs expressed anger over being left out of the planning process for the presidential tour and accused Governor Mbarire of sidelining them completely.
According to sources close to the county assembly, the MCAs felt disrespected and claimed they had been blocked from participating in the President’s visit.
In protest, they threatened to cause disruptions during the event and even considered dissolving the Governor’s Delivery Unit — a team that manages the governor’s key development programs.
With political temperatures rising, MP Geoffrey Ruku called for an urgent night meeting with both parties on April 3, 2025. The closed-door discussion, which lasted over an hour, aimed to prevent the planned protest and ensure unity during the President’s visit.
After the meeting, tensions appeared to ease. The MCAs agreed to support the President’s visit and backed away from their earlier threats.
Ruku later described the disagreement as a misunderstanding and warned that some individuals were trying to undermine development in the region.
Governor Mbarire also agreed to work more closely with the MCAs in future engagements involving national leaders.
The move is seen as a positive step toward improved cooperation between the executive and the county assembly.
Meanwhile, preparations for President Ruto’s visit are in full swing. Clean-up efforts are ongoing in Embu town, and security has been increased.
The Head of State is expected to inspect major development projects, including road infrastructure, affordable housing, produce markets, and rural electrification.
The President’s tour of the Mt. Kenya region has focused on unity, economic growth, and service delivery.
He has urged leaders to put aside political differences and work together for the benefit of citizens.
