A surprising event happened in Tharaka Nithi County during President William Ruto’s tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
The crowd started walking away when Kikuyu Member of Parliament, Kimani Ichung’wah, stood up to speak.
This happened on Friday, April 4, while the president was present. Video shared online shows people leaving as soon as Ichung’wah began his speech.
At first, the cameras showed a wide view of the crowd. But when people started leaving, the cameras zoomed in to focus only on Ichung’wah.
This may have been an attempt to hide the fact that the crowd was walking away. However, some of the people leaving could still be seen.
Ichung’wah continued to speak, even though many people had already left. He acted as if he did not notice the crowd walking away.
This was not the first time he was rejected by people during this tour.
Just a day earlier, Ichung’wah was booed and heckled by a crowd in Ol Kalou Town while with President Ruto. People whistled and shouted as he tried to speak.
He told the crowd, “No one can shout me down. I cannot be intimidated.”
But after more booing, he stopped speaking and gave back the microphone, saying he would not be scared.
There was also tension in Embu County. Local MCAs (Members of County Assembly) were angry that they were not included in planning the president’s visit.
They had planned to cause chaos to protest against their governor, Cecily Mbarire.
However, a late-night meeting with outgoing Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku helped solve the issue. The MCAs then agreed to support the president’s visit.
These events show growing signs of trouble within the Mt. Kenya region, where President Ruto once had strong support.
It also shows that some leaders like Kimani Ichung’wah are now facing rejection from the people.
As President Ruto continues to launch projects in the region, it remains to be seen how he and his team will handle this public dissatisfaction.
