President William Ruto has defended the presence of Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja during his recent tour of Nyeri in the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking on Friday, April 4, 2025, during the handover of Affordable Housing units to police officers in Chuka, Embu County, Ruto said Kanja was there as part of his official duties—not for politics.
"Some people want to create unnecessary confusion. I was in Nyeri to give out title deeds to the people.
The IG was present because we were working for the citizens. His presence should not be turned into a political issue," Ruto explained.
Earlier in the week, on April 2, IG Kanja had joined President Ruto during the Mt. Kenya tour and addressed the public, assuring them that the police will continue to maintain law and order fairly, regardless of political sides.
However, his attendance raised concerns, with critics calling the event political.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) asked Kanja to resign or apologize for what they called a breach of the law.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the IG should stay neutral and not appear at events that seem political.
Despite the criticism, Ruto insisted that Kanja did nothing wrong and said it was normal for police leaders to accompany the president for security purposes.
He reminded the public that even when the IG is not present, other senior officers attend such events.
“In Nyeri, there were about 300 police officers. Why focus only on the IG?” Ruto asked.
The National Police Service also defended IG Kanja, saying his presence was in line with the National Police Service Act, which requires the police to offer security to the President during national duties.
Ruto also denied claims that his development tours are early campaigns for the 2027 elections.
“There is no campaign going on. We are simply doing the work that Kenyans elected us to do,” he said.
